Like Kevin Garnett said, “Anything is possible…”

Posted on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008 in School, Sports, The history of me.

Finally yesterday, my group and I finished off our final paper. I say it like that when in all honesty, everyone else was done, I was just putting the final edits and making sure it sat right with me. Not that they’re slackers, they worked damn hard like me.

Needless to say, we were practicing a few times through our presentation and I felt like there was something missing at the beginning of it. So I used ChaCha and grabbed myself a quote to open it all off with. To preface this, let’s back up…

In Capstone, the class that I’m in, they do a strategic analysis paper to cap off the class. Every group in every class does the same exact company, so it gives a more objective grading to it for all of the groups to go up against each other in the final competition. Prizes include exam exemptions and extra credit points for participation beyond the class level, and if you win it, there’s gift cards there too, so its not a bad thing.

For this semester, the company was Harley Davidson, and their mission statement dealt with dreams. I wanted a quote to tie in with that. And on my second try with ChaCha, I got the above Garnett quote. And it was perfect.

See, I’m not the first guy people think of when it comes to sports. Growing up, I played baseball some and participated in martial arts. I always played neighborhood pickup games of roller hockey, football, basketball, or baseball, and I followed a few teams here and there. As a whole, though, when I came to college I focused so much on the music that the sporty side of me was somewhat lost behind that. Add to that meal plan, the freedom to buy pints of Ben & Jerry’s and bags of Swedish Fish, and a glowing computer monitor with an instant messenger window open and I barely strapped on my roller blades anymore. Sure, I did intermurals a few times, but mostly my first few years.

So why would a sports quote be perfect? My teacher is a huge Piston’s fan. Salt in the wound, and make it count and work. And because he’s a nice guy who I knew would appreciate it and laugh at it? I used it.

And not only that, but I concluded with the same phrase to tie it right back in.

Did we make it to the semi-finals?

While “anything is possible,” apparently that wasn’t. We weren’t the top team, but I still feel good about my last presentation and paper from my last class as an undergraduate…

And down the city from Yankee Stadium…

Posted on Sunday, May 18th, 2008 in Babbling, Sports, Sunday Share.

Following my other Sunday Share a week back on Yankee Stadium, I thought it’d only be fair to show this little clip from the new Citi Field from Keith Olbermann’s visit and subsequential Countdown airing.

While I don’t think that its as cool looking as Yankee Stadium? Its definitely a really nice looking field…

Note: If you’re seeing this entry on a feed, I noticed that last week, unlike YouTube Videos, MSNBC videos do not embed on feed posts. Or at least, not on my Facebook or LJ parts of it… Sorry. You’ll have to come to my blog to watch this one…

A little look inside history in the making…

Posted on Sunday, May 11th, 2008 in Babbling, Commentary on the News, Sports, Sunday Share.

I saw this segment on Countdown with Keith Olbermann last week and I thought it was an nice little piece to share. So while everyone’s enjoying Mother’s Day out there, I thought that I’d give something that might pique the male interest. Behold, new Yankee stadium through the eyes of Keith Olbermann:

A cool little video of the new stadium, as seen by a private tour that he took…

You could walk, jog, or run, if you really choose to…

Posted on Sunday, April 6th, 2008 in Babbling, Homelife, Sports, Sunday Share.

In light of my post from yesterday about health, I’d like for this Sunday’s Share to be a fun little website that I’ve had bookmarked for a while…

WalkJogRun.net

I was directed to that site almost a year ago on one board or another when I mentioned a goal of mine was to someday run the Disney Marathon, and I’ve used it since. Its a great way to map out trails or paths to continue running to best train yourself with the roads you know and not have to take your car out and reset your odometer to check to see how far you’re going. You can tell the site how many miles an hour you’re running, your average speed you wish to maintain, everything, and it’ll tell you the length of the route you’ve chosen and how long it takes you to complete it at that speed.

And I still use it. Its shown me that I live about 1.67 miles from the center of my campus if I were to walk, my old apartment was 1.92 miles, and that if I were to jog around my apartment complex, two laps is two one-hundredths short of 1 mile.

So when I went for a jog on Friday? I know that I ran a mile. Of course yesterday was 3.25 miles, but that’s because the treadmill told me so…

Gore and the Electorial Colleges

Posted on Tuesday, March 25th, 2008 in Commentary on the News, Political Musings, Sports.

So I open up my websites this morning and I read my news and I come across this:
Don’t discount Gore-led ticket - Source: TC Palms

Gore? I mean, seriously, Gore? Don’t get me wrong, I thought he was the man for the job in 2000, but to read this again now in 2008 after a long locked battle between Obama and Clinton? I’m not pleased at all. I’ve heard multiple talks of a brokered convention, and it seriously makes me sad as a complete usurption of the democratic process. I guess all we can really tell is whatever will happen soon enough.

Add to that this fun one:
Electoral College votes could help choose Democratic nominee, Clinton supporter asserts - Source: Herald Tribune

Just digging for a reason to stay here is all I see. I’m just waiting for April 22nd and waiting for something to happen and for there to be a change… This Democratic party in-fighting isn’t wearing well on Democrats in general.

Finally, forget national polls, it makes me even more sad that in their brackets, McCain is beating Obama: 33-15 to 32-16.

The past twenty four hours have been eventful, to say the least…

Posted on Monday, March 24th, 2008 in Babbling, Homelife, Sports, Webmaster Woes.

First of all, to all of the well wishers throughout Sarah’s and my move–via either text message, AIM to my cell, MySpace, or Facebook–thank you. Things went smoothly, for the most part.

The full story, however, involves me cutting myself on two different metal objects and profusely bleeding the second time to the point of feeling like I was going to faint; willingly riding in the trunk of a moving car; and hanging out with some Russians. I’ll tell the full story later, but seeing its 3am, its well time for me to sleep, I’d say.

I did want to apologize for lack of formatting in my prior entries because something messed up that I have no idea what it was. When/if I ever figure it out? I’ll let you know… Also, because I noticed a lot of Splogs taking my feed, well, I followed my friend Mel’s advice… So enjoy the nice little copyright information at the bottom of your feed now… Thanks for understanding.

Alright, I’ve used enough ellipses in these past few sentences that I should give myself and my period key a rest… I’ll be back to my usual posting later today… Unless I drown myself in the sorrows of my homework because Duke lost, completely screwing up my bracket…

Politically charged March Madness…

Posted on Friday, March 21st, 2008 in Political Musings, Sports.

I don’t expect to be updating about March Madness every damn day. I’m not that much of a sports nut, but I did want to say that I’ve gone a very poor 9-7 on my first day and first time ever guessing… For random picks, I’m glad that I even got slightly more than half of them right so far…

But, what I’d like to share here is something for people to look at and laugh as they see fit…

Of the three folks in the presidential race, Senator Hillary Clinton doesn’t have a March Madness bracket. Senator Barack Obama has one up on his blog on his site. And Senator John McCain is a sly dog with one on his site that you have to be a registered user to see. How lame is that? I’m not going to be a liberal asshole and suggest that it means something about his view of democracy to require registration (other than the passing snipe of that suggestion here), but who am I to judge because you have to register to comment on my site here…

So, my friend Tim Firks registered under the name George W. Bush with an address at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and pulled out McCain’s picks from his site. With a bit of Photoshop work to change his HTML into a graphical bracket using Obama’s one as the format, Tim has made it able for me to show you side-by-side brackets from the Republican candidate and the Democratic front-runner…

McCain’s Bracket Obama’s Bracket

I don’t have any sort of commentary on this one, folks. But, hey, if you’re still undecided, you could use their brackets to decide who you want as the leader of your country. I mean, seriously, shows appropriate foresight or something like that, right?

If only politics really were as simple as basketball brackets…

Whyfore art thou mad, March?

Posted on Thursday, March 20th, 2008 in Babbling, Sports.

Its that time of year again when your alma mater matters and you face off in the ultimate fantasy sport that noone cares about but all pretend to know and have something genius about… Yes, my friends, I’m talking about March Madness and the classic bracket picks.

I’ve never really participated in one of these before, so I had no idea what I was doing, seriously. I read a little on some teams, and I said “Ah, fuck it” and picked out some brackets based on what the experts said, what I wanted to see, and just dumb luck. Better than picking them based on their mascots, I guess. I mostly just read this article and figured why not.

Well, why did I do it? Let’s just say that Goob is great at incentives. On HIF, he decided to run a March Madness contest, where the winner got $25. So I added it and just did what I could. That lead to me also join up in the 7M3 board’s group, and then add it on Facebook where I’m in the group that my friend Ben created and my friend Christina is also in.

I figure I’ll be lucky if I get anything right, but right now as I write this up, I’m 2 for 3, and it looks like on the next 3 games that will be finishing, I’ll be ending up maybe going 1 for 3… We’ll see. One upset outta three ain’t too bad, I guess. Hah.

So here’s my completely unblemished bracket without any wins/losses, and when its all said and done? I’ll update with my finished bracket and how bad I end up doing… Still, not bad for just guessing…
